The death of Lazarus<\/p>\n
11\u00a0Now a man named Lazarus was ill. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.\u00a02\u00a0<\/sup>(This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay ill, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)\u00a03\u00a0<\/sup>So the sisters sent word to Jesus, \u2018Lord, the one you love is ill.\u2019<\/p>\n 4\u00a0<\/sup>When he heard this, Jesus said,\u00a0\u2018This illness will not end in death. No, it is for God\u2019s glory so that God\u2019s Son may be glorified through it.\u2019\u00a05\u00a0<\/sup>Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.\u00a06\u00a0<\/sup>So when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed where he was two more days,\u00a07\u00a0<\/sup>and then he said to his disciples,\u00a0\u2018Let us go back to Judea.\u2019<\/p>\n 8\u00a0<\/sup>\u2018But Rabbi,\u2019 they said, \u2018a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?\u2019<\/p>\n 9\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered,\u00a0\u2018Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the day-time will not stumble, for they see by this world\u2019s light.10\u00a0<\/sup>It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.\u2019<\/p>\n 11\u00a0<\/sup>After he had said this, he went on to tell them,\u00a0\u2018Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.\u2019<\/p>\n 12\u00a0<\/sup>His disciples replied, \u2018Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.\u2019\u00a013\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.<\/p>\n 14\u00a0<\/sup>So then he told them plainly,\u00a0\u2018Lazarus is dead,\u00a015\u00a0<\/sup>and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.\u2019<\/p>\n 16\u00a0<\/sup>Then Thomas (also known as Didymus[a<\/a>]<\/sup>) said to the rest of the disciples, \u2018Let us also go, that we may die with him.\u2019<\/p>\n 17\u00a0<\/sup>On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.\u00a018\u00a0<\/sup>Now Bethany was less than two miles[b<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0from Jerusalem,19\u00a0<\/sup>and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.\u00a020\u00a0<\/sup>When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.<\/p>\n 21\u00a0<\/sup>\u2018Lord,\u2019 Martha said to Jesus, \u2018if you had been here, my brother would not have died.\u00a022\u00a0<\/sup>But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.\u2019<\/p>\n 23\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to her,\u00a0\u2018Your brother will rise again.\u2019<\/p>\n 24\u00a0<\/sup>Martha answered, \u2018I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.\u2019<\/p>\n 25\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to her,\u00a0\u2018I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;\u00a026\u00a0<\/sup>and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?\u2019<\/p>\n 27\u00a0<\/sup>\u2018Yes, Lord,\u2019 she replied, \u2018I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.\u2019<\/p>\n 28\u00a0<\/sup>After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. \u2018The Teacher is here,\u2019 she said, \u2018and is asking for you.\u2019\u00a029\u00a0<\/sup>When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.\u00a030\u00a0<\/sup>Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.31\u00a0<\/sup>When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.<\/p>\n 32\u00a0<\/sup>When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, \u2018Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.\u2019<\/p>\n 33\u00a0<\/sup>When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.\u00a034\u00a0<\/sup>\u2018Where have you laid him?\u2019\u00a0he asked.<\/p>\n \u2018Come and see, Lord,\u2019 they replied.<\/p>\n 35\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus wept.<\/p>\n 36\u00a0<\/sup>Then the Jews said, \u2018See how he loved him!\u2019<\/p>\n 37\u00a0<\/sup>But some of them said, \u2018Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?\u2019<\/p>\n 38\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.\u00a039\u00a0<\/sup>\u2018Take away the stone,\u2019\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n \u2018But, Lord,\u2019 said Martha, the sister of the dead man, \u2018by this time there is a bad odour, for he has been there four days.\u2019<\/p>\n 40\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus said,\u00a0\u2018Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?\u2019<\/p>\n 41\u00a0<\/sup>So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said,\u00a0\u2018Father, I thank you that you have heard me.\u00a042\u00a0<\/sup>I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.\u2019<\/p>\n 43\u00a0<\/sup>When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice,\u00a0\u2018Lazarus, come out!\u2019\u00a044\u00a0<\/sup>The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth round his face.<\/p>\n Jesus said to them,\u00a0\u2018Take off the grave clothes and let him go.\u2019<\/p>\n 45\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.\u00a046\u00a0<\/sup>But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.<\/p>\n 9\u00a0<\/sup>Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.\u00a010\u00a0<\/sup>So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,\u00a011\u00a0<\/sup>for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" JOHN 11:1-46 The death of Lazarus 11\u00a0Now a man named Lazarus was ill.
